You have a seat at the table

National Place Card Day® was created in 2018 by Karen Suen-Cooper and Martin Cooper — the co-founders of The Punctilious Mr. P's Place Card Co. — to honor something they'd believed for years: that the small rituals of gathering deserve to be celebrated.
The date is deliberate. March 20th is the first day of spring, when nature stirs again and so does our desire to pull the chairs back from the table and call everyone in.
To set a place card is to say something that cannot quite be said any other way. There is a chair waiting. There is a name — your name — written by hand, standing among the flowers and the glass and the candlelight. Someone thought of you. Someone chose this particular image for you.
In that small act of paper and ink, something shifts. Your guest doesn't just find a seat. They find their place.
This is what a place card has always done. Long before Mr. P. The gesture is ancient. The warmth of it is not.
Every National Place Card Day® comes back to three things.
To celebrate is to acknowledge that any gathering — however small, however ordinary — is a reason. The table itself is the occasion.
To cherish is to look around and understand what you're looking at. These people. This room. This particular Tuesday in March. It won't happen again, not exactly like this.
To connect is to hand someone a card with their name on it and watch what happens to their face.
Mr. P's upright place cards work in both directions at once. The name faces your guest — a private greeting, already waiting when they arrive. The illustrated side faces out, toward the center of the table, where it sparks exactly the kind of conversation you hoped for.
Prefer a card that lies flat? Our laydown cards carry both the image and the name on one side. Tuck them beside the cutlery, rest one against a water glass, or lean them wherever your eye tells you they belong. There is no wrong way. Only the pleasure of watching your guests find their names and, for a moment, feel found.
If you share the same passion for entertaining and gathering as we do, we encourage you to join the gang on March 20th, as we celebrate all of the gatherings that have been meaningful to us over the year on Instagram.

Co-founder Martin Cooper discusses the deeper meaning behind National Place Card Day™
Recorded March 10, 2023 in Old Chatham, New York
Mr. P began the way most good things begin — at home. Our home is B'ellow: a 1790s farmhouse in Old Chatham, New York, in the Hudson Valley, where the seasons announce themselves and there is always, it seems, a reason to set a proper table.
National Place Card Day® was born here. Out of a conviction that the rituals of gathering — the naming, the placing, the welcome — deserve more than an afterthought.
On March 20th, we hope your table is full.
